Vicki L. Berger is the Director of
the Arizona Historical Society Museum in Papago Park, Tempe. AHS is Arizona's
oldest cultural institution, founded by the territorial legislature on
November 7, 1864, charged with preserving Arizona history for the present
and future. The state agency system includes other museums in Tucson,
Flagstaff, and Yuma.
From 1988 to 2003, Dr. Berger was a staff member at the North Carolina
Museum of History, located in the capital city, Raleigh. She held the
positions of Collections Management Section Chief and Curator of Costume
and Textiles. As Curator, Dr. Berger collected clothing (non-military)
and textiles, provided patron services, gave presentations, and served
on the Acquisitions Committee. She worked on several exhibitions such
as North Carolina Women Making History, First Families of North
Carolina (1997 and 2001), North Carolina Quilts: Layers of History,
and Merci America: The Fiftieth Anniversary of the French Gratitude
Train.
In 1990 Dr. Berger developed a graduate level Introduction to Museology
course for the Department of History, North Carolina State University.
She taught the class from 1991 to 2003, served on graduate student program
committees, and supervised museum-related internships. In 2001, she began
team-teaching the American Association for State and Local History workshop,
Collections Management and Practices.
A member of several professional organizations, Dr. Berger has been most
active in the Costume Society of America. Her service includes national
board member, treasurer, and vice-president for education and programs;
regional board member, president, treasurer, and secretary, and organizer
of several mini-meetings and symposia. She is also active in the International
Council of Museums and has attended conferences in Greece, Portugal, Spain,
and Poland.
Dr. Berger is a faithful Arizona Wildcat fan, having graduated twice
from the University of Arizona in Tucson. She earned the Ph.D. in Historic
Costume and Textiles with a minor in Theatre Costume from Florida State
University in Tallahassee. She and her husband Roger live in Phoenix,
where he is a professor of Statistics at Arizona State University-West.
